Persian
Lost 08/26/1875

See More Persian Images

Built in 1874, the 245' four masted steamer "Persian" was only a year old when she was lost to a fire in 1875. She was loaded with 15,000 bushels of wheat and 50,000 bushels of corn, bound Chicago for Buffalo. No lives were lost in the sinking.

Today the persian resides in 195' of water off Long Point, ON. She has a huge boiler, engine and propeller. The charred remains are moderately encrusted in Zebra mussels, and parts are draped with snagged fishing nets. Visibility commonly exceeds 50 feet, bottom temps around 42-45 degrees.
